Armed security guards need special training above and beyond that required for unarmed security guards. They must be well trained in all aspects of firearms use and licensed to carry a weapon. They must also have a controlled temperament and a thorough understanding of the environment where armed guards will be working.

Armed security guards are ordinarily employed for the protection of valuable property such as cash, works-of-art, valuable documents, rare books, jewelry and antiques. And they do more than merely ‘guard’ these valuable assets. They also are employed to escort funds to banks, move cash within a casino, and ensure that as client’s safes and alarm systems are both active and functioning to specifications. Armed security guards are not usually used in retail outlets where guards without weapons are generally an adequate deterrent. Instead, their guard posts are normally within environments where the high-value assets are desirable targets for criminals.

Lethal force is rarely necessary for armed security guards. However, if the situation occurs where this is necessary, they must be prepared not only to protect assets but also to defend other people and themselves.
